Twin homes are one of the more limited things we build, and that's on purpose.
They're not a starter home and they're not a step down from anything. They're built for a particular kind of Sioux Falls buyer — someone who knows exactly what they want out of this stretch of life and has figured out that a bigger house isn't it. There aren't many of them at any given time. The people they're right for tend to know it fast.
So here's what one actually is.
A twin home is two homes built side by side, sharing a single wall. Two — that's the whole thing. Your own front door, your own driveway, your own garage, your own yard.
A townhome connects three or more homes in a row, and it's one of the best ways there is to get into a place of your own. A single-family home stands alone on its lot with space all the way around it. We build both, and both are the right call for plenty of people. A twin home just sits somewhere in between, and for a certain buyer it's the shape that fits best.
Who They're Built For
Mostly, people who've decided the house should take up less of their life.
It's less about needing less space and more about wanting more of everything else. There's a stretch that opens up for a lot of people where the calendar starts filling with things worth doing — grandkids across town or across the country, trips that used to get postponed, a winter somewhere warmer, hobbies that finally get the time they deserve. And a big house has a way of quietly competing with all of it. The upkeep, the yard, the utility bill on rooms nobody's walked into since spring.
A twin home hands a good chunk of that back. Single-level, so everything you need is on one floor. Smaller footprint, so there's less to clean, less to heat, less to keep after. But it's still unmistakably a home — a real garage, a real yard, room for everybody when they come through for the holidays.
That's the balance people are actually chasing. Not less home. Less homework.
What It Feels Like Inside
The word we hear most often is inviting, which is a hard thing to design for and an easy thing to feel.
Part of it's the open concept — the main living space flows, so the square footage lives bigger than it reads on a listing. Part of it's that the practical stuff is genuinely generous: a walk-in pantry with real room in it, a walk-in tiled shower, a walk-in closet in the primary suite, a garage that fits the vehicles and the things that end up in garages. Quartz counters. Nine-foot ceilings, which do more for how a room feels than most people expect.
Some of our twin home plans include a four-seasons room, and it's usually the surprise favorite. Nobody walks in asking for one. Then they stand in it for a while, and you can see the wheels turning about morning coffee in October.
The Buyers Who Find It Sideways
There's a second group that arrives at twin homes completely differently.
These are the people who tour everything — townhomes, single-family, new construction, existing, all of it — with a number in mind and a rough sense of the space they need. They're not shopping a category. They're shopping for the thing that clicks.
A twin home tends to land right where size and price intersect for them. It wasn't the plan. It just fit better than what they'd been picturing, which is a pretty good reason to buy a house.
The Family Next Door, On Purpose
Every so often two families buy a twin home together on purpose. Parents and their kids. Friends who've known each other forever. One household on each side, close enough to walk over, far enough to have your own place.
It's not the reason most people buy one. But it's a nice thing about a home built for two.
